DJ Origin Story

10 years ago, I was a bedroom DJ while working in corporate America. During a friend’s wedding, I noticed that the DJ wasn’t reading the room. When my girlfriend mentioned how bad the DJ was and suggested I could do better, I approached him, told him I was a friend of the groom, and asked if I could spin a few songs. He begrudgingly allowed me to, and the party started jumping! The rest is history.

I love the Grand March prep almost more than the Grand March itself! I like the Grand March prep because I love to get the wedding party hyped before intros at the reception. And the Grand March is a lot of fun because it’s when I officially let the crowd know that DJ Terry is in the building and that we are here to party.

I’m great at working with diverse crowds and reading the room. It doesn’t matter your age or cultural background — I try to create an all-inclusive environment where everybody enjoys themselves. I always bring the energy, and it’s infectious.

Crazy Story From A Wedding You DJ'd

There are countless stories to share, but here’s a fun one for you. One couple expressed their concern that their guests, coming from various cultural backgrounds, might leave the party early. I confidently assured them that I would keep everyone entertained.

Early in the reception, I noticed a guest hug the couple and begin to head for the exit. Just in time, I switched up the music, and she returned to the dance floor. She went to leave again, but with another music change, she found herself back dancing once more.

Finally, she approached me and said, “You have great music, but I really need to go.” Just as she stepped outside, I switched the music again, and she rushed back to the dance floor, put her coat away, and stayed for the entire evening.

DJ Origin Story

Before COVID, I primarily worked in live production. When everything shut down, I was out of work! After six months of working at Amazon, a friend of a friend was asking around for a last-minute DJ because the one they had booked suddenly quit. So I bought a deck, studied it for three days, and DJ’d that weekend. I was able to quit Amazon a month later and haven’t stopped full-time DJing since!

Favorite Part About DJ'ing Weddings

I love finding every couple’s “thing” when it comes to music and using that to make their wedding day truly come alive. No wedding day is ever the same, no couple is ever the same, and no love story is ever the same. DJ’ing weddings is something truly unique — and that’s what I love about it!

DJ Superpower

I get a lot of compliments on my mashup skills because of the way I mix couples’ requests together while keeping the dance floor thriving. I’ve mixed Indian music with Top 40 hits and even Country ballads. (Yes, I said it! Country!) I’ve done the same thing with a South African groom’s music requests and a hispanic crowd that enjoys Cumbia, Bachata, and Reggaeton. I work really well with anything on the fly, and I mix styles together musically to produce epic results.

Crazy Story From A Wedding You DJ'd

There are a lot of great experiences I have had the privilege to be a part of when it comes to weddings. But I’ll tell this story in particular, due to the simple fact it was the first wedding to make me cry! It’s a long one.

This wedding had an amazing couple. The father of the bride had sadly passed away a few years before, and the couple did a so many things in his memory. But there was one that truly stuck with me:

Just after the couple’s first dance, the bride’s mother (Ross’s wife) opened a letter. It turned out that, before he passed, the bride’s father (Ross) had written a letter to her, stating three incredible things.

She had better have married Mitchell! (but she did!)
Though he was not there physically, he will always be watching over her.
He had a special request for all the men in attendance: that during the father/daughter dance, all the men in attendance could have a dance with Savannah (the bride) in his place.

That’s exactly what happened. All the men lined up and had a dance with Savannah. Ross had even picked out several songs for this part! That’s when I cried, during that dance. It was just so incredible to see not only the love Ross had for his daughter, but the love everyone had for Savannah and Mitchell during their big day.

Ross must have been an amazing man for so many people to have been willing to be there when he could not. The whole wedding was truly a beautiful experience.

Personal Quote

Being a wedding DJ is so much more than just playing music and talking on a microphone. It’s a unique service that requires a sense of responsibility mixed with passion and purpose. Every time I DJ for a couple, I’m also offering customer service.

How can I make their day better? Because they might not even remember that sick mix I did, or how I got everyone going crazy during their Grand March. But they’ll remember if I was kind, or willing to do the small things. Such as helping put together a special moment to remember Dad, or even asking if they need another beverage once dinner is served.

This world lacks simple love and kindness sometimes, and I feel like as a DJ, it’s my duty to make sure love and kindness are the only things surrounding you on your wedding day.

One thing to know about me: I love to get into the music physically, whether anyone’s around or not!

There was one time during a wedding that the music really got hype, I was really grooving to a song. I was behind the booth just dancing and doing my thing while mixing, and when I looked up, I realized the entire room was watching and following my hand gestures, mirroring my moves!

I didn’t mean to direct the dancing with my hands; it just happened! But WOW it was so fun to have everyone vibing with me!

I knew I wanted to DJ after witnessing an incredible performance at a convention in Baltimore. After that, I got my first chance in undergrad at Columbia College Chicago. By 2018, I had the opportunity to DJ full-time. Now, I put everything into my couples’ events, not just in genre-picking and reading the dance floor, but in doing whatever needs to happen to make their amazing, unforgettable night come to fruition.

Both curating and being immersed in the vibes. Also, at the end of the night, when everyone’s riding the high of a fantastic evening, seeing reactions that indicate people will always remember that moment.

My superpower is keeping the night rollin’ without a record skip; whatever goes down, doesn’t go down, or the bride and groom WANT to go down, I’m here for it, and I’ll make it look like it was always part of the plan and ensure we all have a great time doing it. Whether it’s an oddball song on the floor to get everyone together, or unique rituals during the grand march that your friends will bust out laughing to, I’ll bring it all together seamlessly.

Crazy Story From A Wedding You DJ'd

A bride and groom who liked metal wanted something to head-bang to with their wedding party to on the dance floor. Their personal request was “Down With the Sickness,” by Disturbed. I wasn’t sure how well it would go, but when all ten of their bridesmaids and groomsmen came out and started moshing on the floor, and the families starting laughing and nodding from their tables, it was clear that everyone knew this was truly their scene.

Personal Quote

I truly bring fun as a DJ, and I love to bring in elements from the couples and their families to make their events unique to them and their tastes. Specific niche tracks, customs mixes, and personal rituals are all part of that fun and specialization. The more stuff a couple wants at their wedding that they’ve never seen at another one, the better I say.

We also used Merc Sound for our DJ, and they delivered an amazing experience for us - we are still getting compliments on how awesome they were!
